Free Crafts – Shrink Art

Posted by admin

The unique properties of foam trays are fun to explore. I don’t recommend using trays that have held meat (too many issues with contamination). Only use trays and containers that held cheese, produce, and restaurant take-away food. Wash and repurpose for some very cool art projects.

Shrink Art

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Draw simple pictures on the bottom of a Styrofoam tray with permanent markers. Cut out the pictures and place on a cookie sheet or a piece of aluminum foil. Place in the oven for a few minutes. When you see them curl and shrink take them out of the oven.

You can make your shrink art into jewelry by punching or cutting a hole in the top of each shape before putting them in the oven. When your shapes have cooled they can be threaded onto yarn or colored string.

You can make ornaments for Christmas of course, but how about Valentine’s, St. Patrick’s, Easter, 4th of July or family birthdays. Press cookie cutters into the tray surface. Snap out the designs or cut out with scissors. Paint or decorate with markets, Use a paper punch to punch a hole near the top and after baking and cooling loop string or ribbon through the hole.

Paint Palette

Foam trays can be used as a paint palette and when you’re done with your art project the paint palette may end up being just as beautiful. Once the paint dries it can be used as a tray to hold small items in a bedroom or bathroom.
